Hamstring Strain / Sciatica
The main function of the hamstring is to bend our knee. It also helps the glutes in extending the hip. True hamstring tears from an over stretch (e.g. sliding tackle in soccer) are surprisingly rare. More often than not, hamstring pain is a result of sciatic nerve irritation (the nerve that innervates the hamstring) or from weak/tight glutes that refer pain into the hamstring. Addressing lower back mechanics and relieving neural and muscle tension of the glutes, groin and hamstrings are paramount to full function.
A combination of physiotherapy, acupuncture and a home exercise program will pave the path for recovery.
