A Baker’s cyst (also known as a popliteal cyst) is a pocket of fluid that forms a lump in the space at the back of the knee. This often causes a bulge and tight feeling behind your knee when fully bent, fully straight or when active. You may feel swelling at the back of the knee that worsens with long periods of standing and/or pain in the upper calf.

A Bakers cyst is usually a result of an underlying factor such as cartilage tear or osteoarthritis. Diagnosing and addressing the underlying cause with the correct advice, physiotherapy, acupuncture and a biomechanical assessment is crucial.
